Harry Potter Things to Do in England Within 3 Hours of London
Once you’ve walked the Harry Potter filming locations in London, the magic doesn’t stop at the M25. Some of the most iconic scenes in the films were shot at cathedrals, colleges and villages you can reach within about three hours of the capital — perfect for a day trip.
Here are the best real Harry Potter locations a short journey from London, roughly nearest first.
Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Leavesden (~30 minutes)
Not a “location” but the mothership: the actual studios where the films were made, now home to the original sets, props and costumes. Take a train from Euston to Watford Junction, then the shuttle bus. It pairs perfectly with a London walking tour — the city for the real streets, the studio for the sets.
Oxford (~1 hour)
Oxford’s colleges are all over the early films:
- Christ Church — students really do climb its grand stone staircase in the films. One honest catch, though: the Great Hall itself was a set built at the studios, using Christ Church’s dining hall only as a reference (the real one has three long tables, not four).
- The Bodleian Library — the Divinity School doubled as the Hogwarts infirmary, and Duke Humfrey’s Library became the Hogwarts library.
- New College — the cloisters are where a certain unfortunate transfiguration into a ferret takes place in Goblet of Fire.
Fast trains run from London Paddington and Marylebone.
Lacock, Wiltshire (~2 to 2.5 hours)
A National Trust village that’s a Potter double-header:
- Lacock Abbey — its medieval cloisters and rooms appear as Hogwarts corridors and classrooms in the first two films.
- Lacock village itself provided exteriors for Godric’s Hollow and the young Snape’s home.
Gloucester Cathedral (~2 hours)
The cathedral’s spectacular fan-vaulted cloisters stand in for the corridors of Hogwarts in Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets — including the wall where the ominous message about the Chamber appears.
Lavenham, Suffolk (~1.5 to 2 hours)
This impossibly pretty medieval wool town is home to De Vere House, whose exterior became the Potters’ cottage in Godric’s Hollow — the site of the most fateful night in the whole story.
The Forbidden Forest woodlands (~1 hour)
Several stretches of ancient Buckinghamshire woodland — including Black Park and Burnham Beeches, near the studios — were used for the Forbidden Forest scenes. They’re free to visit and lovely for a walk.
Durham Cathedral (~3 hours by train)
Further north, but reachable on a fast train, Durham Cathedral’s cloisters feature as Hogwarts corridors in the first two films — including the snowy quad where Harry releases his owl.
